What is the difference between a pay server and a free server? Most ISP's come with some form of a newsgroup server however they are usually lacking several key features that are necessary for a smooth NG experience. First two things to consider are retention and completion. Completion is how often a file will show up in a newsserver as a complete file. Crappy servers will have incomplete files all over the place and if the poster neglected to make pars, will render the game/movie/cd useless to you. Retention is how long a file will remain on your newsserver. Many ISP's including mine (Verizon), have a short newsserver retention time of about 7 days. This means that 7 days from the time the file is posted, it will begin to disappear for your downloading pleasure. However there are better alternatives to using a sucky low completion/retention ISP newsserver. You can get a pay server. They are generally inexpensive and provide much better c/r. Here is a list of what we believe is in order from most useful and going down.
Granted there are other GOOD providers, but this is just a quick rundown of some good ones. It's usually a good idea to go with a pay server of any sort. And last but not least, posts by us are not made to accomadate people who have 1-2 day retention. Asking for reposts minutes/hours after a full post has been made will probably get swept under the rug and ignored until a certain amount of time has passed. There are in fact free ng servers you can find on google, yahoo, etc, however they usually have very poor retention and completion and carry very little binary groups. How do I fill requests?First. Make sure that you have the files that the person is wanting. Second. Make sure that they are original scene release files *OR* you message the person who requested the files and verify that a repack is ok. (If you do not know what a repack or scene release is, you prolly shouldnt be here). Third. You need to make a 10% Par2 set in quickpar. (see the quickpar FAQ) and verify that you also have the .sfv and .nfo files for your particular set of files. Fourth. Get the program yEnc Power Post. Set the program up accordingly with this Guide. Fifth. Is just watching the upload go. Some basic commands that will help you along:
NOTE: We DONT recommend you uploading through your ISP, but many people do. You can always buy a 10 dollar astraweb account and as long as you dont *DOWNLOAD* the 25 gigs limit, you get unlimited lifetime upload. Newshosting also has a really nice upload feature as well as GigaNews and UseNetServer. |
